A Pair of Pink Pussies

My husband and I will be attending the Women’s March in Washington D.C. next week. He didn’t start out an uppity feminist like me, and sometimes I don’t think he’s quite sure what he’s got himself into, marrying me, but when I told him I was planning to hop on a bus and crash on a floor so that I’d be able to go, he booked a hotel room for us and decided to take me down there himself.

Don’t get me wrong. He’s come a long way on the feminist front. I think most of it was finding out that feminism, despite it’s PR, really is about balance and equality and the ability of people to be their own fully recognized human beings, regardless of gender. And being in a relationship with me has given him the opportunity to witness and ruminate on the experiences of women in the world. One of my favorite times was the last time his parents came to see us together, and he verbally threw himself on a few grenades they lobbed so that I wouldn’t have to wade into battle myself.

The best one, in my opinion, was when his mother said, in response to a documentary on Eleanor Roosevelt, “bless her heart, she was a very accomplished woman, but she was NOT pretty”, and Russ just asked her “what the hell does THAT have to do with anything?!?” I may have smirked quietly to myself about that one.

A friend of mine posted an article about the Pussy Hat Project (which you can read more about here), lamenting that making all of the hats pink was a silly limitation to apply. Myself, having seen some of the creativity knitters have summoned, I was just glad it was the feline variety, and not something more O’Keeffian in nature. Don’t get me wrong, I aspire to knit the Pearl Clutcher sweater one day, and wear it to some fancy ass event attended primarily by stuff-shirts. But I didn’t particularly fancy the idea of wearing a vagina on my head.

Russ saw this and said that, once that confusion was cleared up, he sorta wanted one of the hats to wear at the march.

So that’s the story of why we went to Michael’s at 8pm tonight and bought two balls of Pepto Bismol pink yarn for our matching pussy hats.
