Green Mountain Hothead: A Choose-Your-Adventure Pattern

As a native Californian who was living in Vermont, I needed all the help I could get to keep warm, especially when I had no car and took the bus everywhere. I came up with this pattern a few years ago, and only recently thought of writing it up to offer to others. This hat has two complete knitted layers, with a fold up brim to give extra warmth over the ears. It’s knit starting with the fold up brim, which is knit with the outside facing inward, continuing through the rest of the outside hat (or hat 1). Once hat 1 is completed, the stitches for hat 2 are picked up along a fold row of hat 1, then knit in a similar pattern to the first hat. When the second hat is completed, it is tucked up into the first hat to make the lining. Since I never knit anything the same way twice, I’m including instructions for some optional design choices along the way, including contrasting color stripes to the fold up brim, various ribbing options, and instructions for hiding the inside hat a few rows under the fold line in case you don’t want to see the lining hat. I’m also including a tip or two that I wish I’d had when I started knitting twenty years ago. Some may not need them, but on the chance this is your first hat, or even your first time knitting in the round, I hope you find them helpful.
